Civic beautification projects in North Reading include our Adopt an Island program, maintaining the flowering garden at the “Welcome to North Reading” sign on the Town Common, maintaining the garden at Ipswich River Park, providing holiday wreaths for the town buildings each December, and hosting the Art in Bloom event at the Flint Memorial Library in the spring.
Other Continuing Projects and Activities:
Over the years our club has had members participate in the Boston Flower Show, the Topsfield Fair Flower Show, and the annual Art in Bloom event at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Members use their talents to create imaginative floral arrangements for these events.
Our newest project is decorating a theme tree for the Methuen Festival of Trees. A committee of club members chooses a theme and members can contribute ornaments for the tree. The money raised by the festival benefits historic preservation in the Merrimack Valley.
Our Spring Plant Sale is held each May in front of the Flint Memorial Library to raise money for civic beautification activities and programs.
The Club conducts an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony each year at Ipswich River Park.
In addition, the North Reading Garden Club has created a garden at Ipswich River Park at the Blue Star Memorial By-Way marker, and installed a granite bench for the community to enjoy. The Club plants and maintains the garden year round.
The North Reading Garden Club offers a scholarship to a North Reading graduating senior. The scholarship is available for a student majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design or architecture, conservation, forestry or botany.
The Garden Club holds monthly Garden Therapy sessions at the Meadowview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Reading. Residents are delighted to create simple floral designs with our members.
Field trips are held periodically to interesting places related to gardening.
